1. The Belgian Better Internet Consortium
The field of awareness initiatives for a better internet for kids is quite fragmented in Belgium. In any case you have the division between federal and regional competences, between initiatives within the different communities and districts and between the different policy domains like media, education, privacy, economy, justice, welfare and health promotion, culture, youth ... That caused a lack of coordination between these initiatives and hinders the initiatives in their aim to be reach to the general public. Citizens have trouble to find their way to the initiatves, and the initiatives in turn to the citizens.
The Belgian Better Internet Consortium brings together the most important Belgian awareness initiatives to increase their coordinattion and reach through dialogue and cooperation. We work on joint initiatives, a central database, the Safer Internet Day ... In this way, together we learn to use the internet better, technically and critically.
The members of the Consortium are:
- Mediawijs (imec vzw)
- Child Focus
- Média Animation asbl
- Conseil Supérieur de l'Éducation aux Médias (CSEM)
- Center for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB)
- the Federal Government Service for Economy
- Unia
- Department of Education and Training of the Flemish Government
- Mediaraven vzw
- Action Médias Jeunes
- Technofutur TIC
In the B-BICO-project we have worked together on among others:
- Betternet.be: Betternet.be is a database with all kinds of aids, tools, videos, awareness campaigns and many other initiatives by Belgian organisations for a Better Internet for children and young people. It's not about “just another tool”, but about an access point that helps you navigate the rich Belgian range of initiatives for digital and media literacy. Betternet.be is there for parents, teachers, youth workers, educators… to find a resource, an activity, information or guidance about the use of the internet by children and young people and children and what goes with it.
