5 questions to answer before reacting to hate speech
You see an awful lot of hate speech online, sometimes directed at you, sometimes towards someone els. But how you react to it, is another story.
To guide you towards a happy ending, we serve you with 5 questions:
- Question 1: Who and which result do you want to reach?
- Question 2: How much time do I want to invest?
- Question 3: What do I want to react to?
- Question 4: What strategy do I choose?
- Question 5: What tone do I use?
These 5 questions aren't in a fixed order. There in the most logical order, but you can adjust it of skip some quetions. All combination are possble! (Even choosing several options in answer to one question is possible, e.g. when you're adressing the target as well as the bystanders.)
A poster as a worksheet
Underneath this and in attachment you will find an overview poster with the 5 choices. It's a worksheet to actively work on the questions and indicate what options you choose. That way you have a good overview of your choices to work on your (re)action. With every question we provided some further explanation and tips on separate pages.
The Roadmap to Reacting to hate speech was developed in the Alternarratief project by Tumult, Mediaraven, Orbit vzw supported by Mediawijs en the Flemish Government. It was translated into English for the EMELS project.
